Last Updated on April 5, 2024 by Programme

You can now check and track the status of your Sehat Health Card by using your CNIC and eligibility status. The Sehat Card is a novel initiative by the government of Pakistan aimed at providing health insurance to its citizens. It covers medical expenses up to Rs. 100,000 per year for each family, making it an affordable option for those who cannot otherwise afford health insurance.

The government has established a website and toll-free number for individuals to apply for the Sehat Card. The application process is straightforward; simply provide your CNIC number and contact details. Once approved, you will receive a Sehat Card that can be used at any of the listed hospitals and clinics throughout Pakistan.

In recent years, Pakistan has made significant progress in improving its healthcare system. However, a considerable portion of the population still cannot afford basic medical treatment due to financial constraints. In order to tackle this issue, the Government of Pakistan launched the Sehat Sahulat Card (SSC) scheme in 2015. This program provides free health coverage to vulnerable households across the country.

What is the Sehat Sahulat Card?

The Sehat Sahulat Card is a health insurance program designed to provide easy access to quality healthcare services to marginalized communities in Pakistan. The program is meant for those who are living below or near the poverty line and cannot afford expensive medical treatment. The SSC offers an annual health cover of up to PKR 720,000 to eligible families, which covers hospitalization, surgeries, childbirth, and diagnostic procedures without any charge.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for obtaining a Sehat Sahulat Card are based on socioeconomic indicators such as income level, household size, and ownership of assets. In order for a family to be deemed eligible for the program, they must have a total annual income of less than PKR 30,000 ($185). Moreover, only five members per family can avail of this service, and their details must be submitted through their respective union councils or databases maintained by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

Coverage Offered by Sehat Sahulat Card

One of the main advantages of SSC is that it provides comprehensive coverage for various healthcare services, including outpatient services such as consultations with doctors as well as inpatient services like diagnostic tests and hospitalization expenses, without any charges at the point of care. However, there may be exceptions, like individual doctor’s fees, etc.

Here are some areas where the coverage provided by the Sehat Sahulat card can prove to be life-saving for those who cannot afford healthcare on their own:

• In-patient hospital care, including room and board, diagnostic tests, procedures, and surgeries

• Emergency services, accident coverage [if the cardholder gets admitted to an emergency ward], burn treatments, and related medical interventions

• Maternity care without financial constraints. The scheme covers normal deliveries as well as C-sections if required.

• Outpatient visits at all public hospitals. Beneficiaries are given access to doctors and consultants for consultation without any extra charges.

Availability of Sehat Sahulat Card

The program is available across all provinces of Pakistan, including the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) regions. Applications can be submitted online or physically through union councils and the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA).

Benefits Of Sehat Sahulat Card

The main benefits of the Sehat Sahulat card scheme are:

• Affordable access to healthcare: This scheme provides free medical treatment access for eligible households who cannot afford basic healthcare facilities due to financial reasons.

• No payment hassle: Whenever a beneficiary uses their SSC registered number to access a healthcare service in any public or select private health facility, no payments will need to be made for the covered services.

• Availability Across Pakistan: The program is present in all four provinces of Pakistan, AJK, and GB, making it accessible to everyone.

• Ambulance Services: 24/7 ambulance service is available via the helpline 1020, which provides this service with a nominal usage fee.

Limitations Of Sehat Sahulat Card

Despite its many boons, certain caveats should also be kept in mind while assessing the true potential of the Sehat Sahulat Card program. The scheme has some limitations, as discussed below:

1) Exclusions: Few expensive procedures may not be covered under SSC like cosmetic surgeries, dental treatment, etc.

2) Accessibility Issues: Private hospitals are not available to everyone; rather, only select ones are affiliated with the scheme, so due to geographical inaccessibility, it may not benefit all beneficiaries.

3) Gender Bias: Only one female in a family might be eligible for this service, which is highly discriminatory towards women, especially those who have dependent families.

4) Network Limitations: Sometimes the Sehat Sahulat Card registration system faces issues like technical glitches, etc., affecting the beneficiaries and causing inconvenience in availing of medical services.

Despite its caveats, the Sehat Sahulat card program has become an instrumental project in providing aid to underprivileged families living across Pakistan. Its biggest achievement so far has been breaking the traditional spiral of poverty-driven ill health, where individuals end up living with illnesses and diseases that they cannot afford to treat due to financial distress. It is hoped that other low-income countries can adopt similar measures to help destigmatize healthcare disparity and make basic amenities accessible for all sections of society without pushing them into penury or debt.
